About Day of Mourning

Every year, the Day of Mourning is observed on April 28 to pay tribute to those who have died or been injured at work.

The Day of Mourning offers employees and employers the opportunity to publicly renew their commitment to improve health and safety in the workplace.

Last year, 18 families in Nova Scotia were forever changed when 18people died at work or because of their work.

One fatality is simply too many - the cost too great.

Day of Mourning awareness is led by the Nova Scotia Federation of Labour and supported by the Nova Scotia Department of Labour, Skills and Immigration, WCB Nova Scotia, and Threads of Life. The most important participants, however, are the families, friends, neighbours, coworkers, and employers of those who were lost.

We must remain vigilant in our efforts to work together to continue to reduce the impact of workplace injury in Nova Scotia. Review and recommit to a workplace safety culture that supports both the physical and psychological health and safety of your employees. Ensure employees are trained to work safely and that equipment is safe, that awareness and support are available for psychological health and safety, and that you have an occupational health and safety policy in place.
