About Day of Mourning
Every year, the Day of Mourning is observed on April 28 to pay tribute to those who have died or been seriously injured because of their work.
The Day of Mourning offers employees and employers the opportunity to publicly renew their commitment to improve health and safety in the workplace.
In 2025, 22 Nova Scotians died at or because of their work, leaving 22 family, friends and colleagues forever impacted. Each of these deaths is a profound tragedy - and in many cases, preventable.
Day of Mourning awareness is led by the Nova Scotia Federation of Labour and supported by the Nova Scotia Department of Labour, Skills and Immigration, WCB Nova Scotia, and Threads of Life. The most important participants, however, are the families, friends, neighbours, coworkers, and employers of those who were lost.
